I recently had a male friend of mine, who is a devoted Christian, ask me not to wear heels around him and preferably not to wear heels period. I was confused so I asked him why and he replied that heels are very suggestive and he feels that they cause him to fall into sin in the form of lust. I know as Christian women we are called to be modest and not provoke men into lust but is this a common reaction in men? I know that personally, I see heels a fashion thing not something to suggest something sexual but I can see his point because heels are advertised and given the stigma of being "sexy". I guess I'm asking for thoughts, opinions, and personal experience with this. Out of respect for his wishes I will stop wearing heels around him but I don't really want to not wear them ever again, not only are they pretty but I've invested a good deal of money in them...

So he's expecting you to change how you wear because he can't handle women in heels? Sounds like he needs to learn a bit more self control and not try to force others to change to make his life easier. Paul talks about thought life a bit in some of his letters, particularly about being transformed by the renewing of our minds and about taking captive every thought. If he mentions it to you again just politely tell him that you enjoy wearing heels (or you just want to if that's the case), and if he doesn't like them he doesn't have to look.

I sure do love a women in heels.

It's okay to dress sexy. Sexy isn't necessarily "immodest". He's probably into you, and this is his sexually repressed way of communicating that.

Yipes, heels are immodest now? Next he'll want all women to dress in burqa's or something... seriously, the dude has issues if something like heels sets him off. (Also, you must have some darn sexy calf muscles...)

... or a short skirt? haha. Or he's severely metro and is coveting your heels... I thought I'd exhaust the manly options first, though...

I completely agree! And like one person mentioned, I agree that it's alright to be alluring or sexy. You're not saying "come take me." You're saying -- look at what I have to offer. Look at how lovely I am!

And heck, even if you are doing it to attract a partner, he should have self-control. As a matter of fact, it's a tad insulting to us ladies. Women in businesses wear heels -- does this mean that we're viewed objectively as opposed to being professional?

Anyway, I don't think this guy is TRYING to be pushy or crazy. I think he's honestly trying to protect himself (and you), but there are easier ways of taking care of it.

I'd hate to see how this guy functions in regular society, what with vaguely plunging necklines, push-up bras, and jewelry. If you're the one with the problem, you can't go to the rest of the world and ask it to accomodate you. That's like a fat guy walking out in public and telling everyone he sees that they can't eat any chocolate, candy, fast food, fried food, etc., around him, because it causes him to fall into eating temptation. The world would laugh him out of the place, and rightly so.

If your friend brings this up to you again, politely say, "While I wouldn't want you to feel tempted by anything, you are going to be a married man and you will be tempted by a lot of things. Part of being an adult is being able to handle temptation." If he tries to press the issue, tell him that you will wear whatever you like and you would appreciate it if he not tell you how to dress. If that causes him to stop being friends with you or to avoid you, that's his problem, not yours. And, if that's how he chooses to take it, it's a very poor solution to the problem.
